Significant diversity exists within the main freshwater algal classes: Diatoms (10 000 to 100 000 taxa), Chrysophyceae (over 1000 taxa), Chlorophyceae (over 4000 taxa), Zygophyceae (over 3000 taxa), Dinophyceae (over 500 taxa), Euglenophyceae (over 1000 taxa), Cryptophyceae (over 120 taxa).

Their huge diversity and their ubiquity make them excellent ecological indicators for rivers, lakes and marine (eg water framework directive) waters. Metabarcoding enables the automation of identifications which have until now been done under the microscope.

Diat.barcode database is a library of barcodes which is curated and which guarantees good taxonomical homogeneity and good quality of sequences. Data have different sources:

  • The culture collection of Thonon, INRAE, TCC
  • The barcoding project of diatoms in UK
  • Public data (NCBI)

Several European labs participate in this curation:

Photos of the cultures and samples of the TCC can be found at Photos
